In October 2008, 8 Gold Award achievers from across Canada set out on an adventure of a life time. We were chosen to represent Canada at the International Gold Event. The event was held in Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar. At the event there were 93 delegates representing 29 different countries. Canada had the second largest delegation next to the UK.
The International Gold Event is a conference like gathering held every 3 years that brings together young people from all over the world who have done The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The theme of this years’ event was Making a Difference, Telling the Story, and Connecting. While at the event we were involved in various skill type workshops based on the theme of the event. We also did adventurous journey activities, and community service. During the last few days of the event, we worked together to come up with five topics about the Award programme that were important to us and create workshops based on these topics. The last couple of days were spent with the members of the International Council presenting our workshops and sharing our ideas for the Award programme.
The two week event was a whirlwind of activity. I will share more about what we did over the course of the week. Check back here to learn more about IGE, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and The International Award for Young People.
